About Penray Gardens
Penray Gardens is a pick-your-own garden just south of Otaki on State Highway 1, about an hour north of Wellington on the Kapiti Coast. A small team grows strawberries as the main crop, along with a mixed run of vegetables including courgettes, gherkins, tomatoes, onions and peppers that come into pick-your-own condition through summer and autumn. Strawberry picking typically starts in November and continues while the fruit lasts. Opening days are irregular and depend on what is ripe and the weather, so visitors are asked to call the PYO hotline before travelling out. When open, picking hours run from around 11am to 3pm. The property has been run as a working pick-your-own operation for many years and is one of the better known summer fruit destinations for people travelling up the Kapiti Coast from Wellington.
